Thames Future Looks Bright
Opening a fuel storage facility on the River Thames has secured our place in the heart of what promises to be a thriving centre for commercial shipping activity in the future. London Gateway is to be the first new deep-sea port to open in the UK for over 20 years – it will be fully integrated with Europe’s largest logistics park, offering units of up to one million square feet.
Construction and engineering work on this ambitious port development, situated on the north bank in Thurrock, Essex, has been underway for some time. An extensive dredging operation has taken place, and the shipping lane has been deepened. Environmental marine and wildlife monitoring projects are in full swing, and latest estimates are that London Gateway will open to container ships towards the end of 2013. The state-of-the-art port will have six berths, fully automated systems and has been technologically designed to improve handling speeds.
London is already one of Britain’s busiest ports, handling over 50 million tonnes of trade every year. London Gateway will bring even more business down the river, providing some exciting new bunkering and shipping opportunities for Sea Tankers and the Geos Group as a whole.
